Kenyans Eager of Odinga's Response

Kenyans waited on Tuesday for the response of opposition leader Raila Odinga to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory in the Oct. 26 election.

Odinga, a veteran politician who has now lost his fourth election, is expected to give his first reaction to Kenyatta’s Monday night victory in a speech to loyalists from his Luo tribe some time after 8 a.m.

“We are just waiting for Baba to speak,” said Desmond Litava, an Odinga supporter in Kawangware, a restive slum in the capital, Nairobi, using a term of respect for the leader.

In the worse case, Odinga could call for his supporters to take to the streets, unleashing chaos in cities such as Nairobi and Kisumu to the detriment of the already struggling economy.

After a disputed election in 2007, around 1,200 people were killed in clashes between rival ethnic gangs that also led to a prolonged slump in the region’s biggest and most important economy.

On the other hand, Odinga could limit his appeal to the courts, as he did in 2013, and yield to diplomatic pressure to engage in post-election ‘national dialogue’ with his arch political rival.

The announcement of Kenyatta’s victory, by a margin of 98 per cent due to an Odinga boycott on the grounds the election was not free or fair, provoked anger in pro-Odinga slums, whose residents burnt tire barricades and threw rocks at police.

Anti-riot officers responded with volleys of tear gas, in scenes that have been common in Nairobi’s slums and Odinga strongholds in western Kenya since the first attempt at an election on Aug. 8.

That vote was annulled by the Supreme Court on the basis of procedural irregularities in the vote-tallying. Odinga argued that the re-run was also flawed because of a failure to replace key officials of the election commission.

Woman Dies Days After Giving Birth to Quadruplets in Katsina

38-year-old, Gaje Zubairu, who was delivered of quadruplets at the General Hospital, Malumfashi, Katsina State, last Wednesday through caesarian operation, died Sunday morning.

According to Punch, the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. AbdulHamed Abdullahi, confirmed the development but provided no details on the circumstances surrounding the death.

Speaking to a Punch correspondent, he said: “Yes, the woman died about 11 this morning (Sunday). But I will call you back to give you details as I am driving.”

However, the cause of the woman's death is still unknown but sources at the hospital said Gaje’s death was unconnected with the caesarian section, because, according to them, her health condition had already stabilised after the operation and plans were even being made for the naming of the babies.

One of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Gaje had already scaled though the operation stress and we were looking forward to the naming ceremony of the babies.

“A good Samaritan had even purchased the ram that is to be slaughtered on Wednesday for the naming ceremony. We were just alerted from our duty post to her sudden restlessness and few minutes later, she was dead.”

Gaje’s remains were taken to her village, Gora Dansaka, for burial according to Islamic rites on Sunday.

Gaje had been delivered of three boys and one girl through a caesarian operation last Wednesday by a medical team at the General Hospital, Malumfashi, Katsina State.

One of the quadruplets died in the evening of the delivery date, leaving three behind. Family sources said the remaining three babies were in good condition.

Policeman Attacks Immigration Officer In Benue

Roland Oibe, a 32-year-old official of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Benue State Command, has been hospitalised after he was allegedly attacked by a policeman in the state.

According to a report, we learnt that the victim and his wife had just welcomed their first child.

He was returning from where he went to buy baby food around 8pm when the policeman allegedly threw an object at the wheel of his motorcycle on Benson Abonu Street.

Daniel was said to have fallen, breaking his jaw and a tooth.

The policeman, who was reported to be alone on the road, allegedly fled the scene of the incident.

The victim’s elder brother, Daniel, said Roland was rushed to a private hospital in the area.

He said, “My brother was attacked by the policeman on Monday around 8pm. His wife had just been delivered of their first child. He went to buy baby food and was riding home when the policeman threw something at the motorcycle.

“There is no justification for the attack. Although, there is a law banning commercial motorcycle riders from operating in the state from 9pm, the commercial motorcycles have a grading system, which distinguish them from private motorcycles. My brother was riding a private motorcycle and he was not flagged down.

“When I got to the scene, I gathered that the policeman had fled. We rushed him to a private hospital where he had been receiving treatment.”

Daniel said the family of the victim went to different stations to know if the errant policeman could be identified, adding that all the divisions in the area denied posting anyone to the place.

He said the family later reported to authorities of the NIS and the command promised to get the perpetrator of the crime.

“The attack happened in front of the NIS controller’s house. The NIS said they would do something. We want justice and the police should take up the medical expenses of my brother. We have spent a lot of money and the bills keep rising,” he added.

Daniel later informed Punch Metro that the case had been transferred to the police command headquarters, saying the policeman had been identified and arrested.

He said the name of the culprit had yet to be released to the family, adding that the police had visited Roland at the hospital.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, said he was not aware of the incident, promising to get back after making enquiries.

He had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Kenyan Police Have Been Slammed By Amnesty International

Police in Kenya have been using “unlawful force’’ against protesters after chaotic elections last week, Amnesty International said in a strongly worded statement on Monday.

The London-based rights watchdog detailed excessive police violence in parts of Nairobi and the western city of Kisumu, pointing to several fatal police shootings.

The violence came after Kenya’s controversial election re-run on Thursday after an August vote was nullified due to irregularities.

“What we are witnessing appears to be punitive policing; a blatant attempt to intimidate and punish residents in the opposition stronghold,’’ said Justus Nyang’aya, head of Amnesty International Kenya said of events in Kisumu.

The Amnesty statement also pointed the finger at supporters of both main political groups.

“In Nairobi, instances of police brutality were interspersed with acts of violence and intimidation by supporters of the two main political figures in the country – incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga,’’ Amnesty said.

Two people were shot by police in Kisumu an Odinga stronghold on Election Day, the group said, and a community worker was shot in Nairobi’s Mathare slum while another man in Kisumu was beaten to death.

Kenya’s repeat poll was boycotted by opposition leader Odinga and turnout was a mere 34 per cent, with protesters blocking polls from opening at all in some areas.

Results are expected to be announced on Monday, with a massive win for Kenyatta and further protests likely.
